Perth Airport Momentum Continues with Record January Traffic

Perth Airport has achieved an extraordinary milestone, marking its busiest month ever. Over 1.56 million passengers traversed its terminals in January, shattering previous records and signaling robust growth.

Perth Airport’s remarkable growth continues into 2025, following a year of strong growth last year. The airport welcomed a record-breaking 16.9 million passengers in 2024, a testament to its resilience and strategic expansion.

This milestone surpassed the previous record of 15.3 million set in 2023, marking a significant 14% increase compared to pre-COVID levels, a truly extraordinary rebound.

Perth Airport Booming

CEO Jason Waters noted the sustained momentum. “The exceptional growth in passenger numbers demonstrates a clear trend: Perth Airport is booming,” he stated. “December’s records for interstate and international travel were swiftly surpassed in January.”

Specifically, January witnessed a remarkable 561,156 interstate passengers and 515,581 international passengers. This surge propelled the airport to an all-time record of 1,564,605 passengers within a single month. Notably, it also marked the first time the airport exceeded 500,000 international passengers in a month.

“West Australians now enjoy a wider range of holiday destinations,” Waters explained. “Simultaneously, we are welcoming an increasing number of international visitors eager to experience Western Australia’s vibrant tourism and hospitality sectors.”

International Travel Growth

The surge in passenger numbers is largely attributed to a robust recovery in international travel. Pent-up demand fueled a remarkable 23% year-on-year growth in this sector.

This segment contributed significantly to the overall increase in 2024, accounting for 56% of the additional 1.6 million passengers compared to 2023.

Future Expansion and Growth

The airport is now on track to achieve its projected 20 million passengers by 2030.

To accommodate this burgeoning demand and enhance the passenger experience, Perth Airport has embarked on an ambitious multi-billion-dollar investment program.

This comprehensive plan includes the construction of a new runway, and state-of-the-art terminal facilities. On the non-airside, there will be two multi-story car parks with major road upgrades, and the development of the airport’s first hotel.

Qantas has embarked on a significant overhaul of its governance practices following a review that identified shortcomings in decision-making and stakeholder trust.

These are strategic investments designed to future-proof the airport and ensure it can handle the projected growth. The airport’s commitment to modernization will not only improve passenger flow but also create a more welcoming and efficient environment for travelers. By investing in its infrastructure, Perth Airport is solidifying its role as a key driver of economic growth in the region.

“When Perth Airport thrives, so does the Western Australian economy,” Waters emphasized. This infrastructure development is crucial for the state’s future.

To ensure the efficient delivery of this complex program within a live operational setting, Perth Airport has enlisted the expertise of Bechtel, a globally recognized engineering, construction, and management firm. This strategic partnership will bolster the airport’s ability to manage its ambitious expansion plans.

The record-breaking passenger numbers and ongoing development position Perth Airport as a key driver of economic growth in Western Australia.
