Decoding Silent Firing: an emerging career trend in 2025

Silent firing. As far as career terms go, after quiet quitting and loud quitting, this term is a new workplace trend that is picking up momentum now. We speak to experts to understand what it means and what the implications are. Defining silent firing:
Viswanath PS, MD & CEO, Randstad India, a talent company says that silent firing has come up as one of the new workplace trends as organizations navigate the complexities of the digital age. This practice, increasingly prevalent in sectors like IT, ITES, and tech, sees employers subtly pushing talent out by making their work environments challenging and unrewarding, rather than through direct layoffs. In India, for instance, around 18,000 – 20,000 professionals experienced this in 2023 he explains. This is often linked to the widespread adoption of AI and automation, displacing certain roles, and leading companies to reduce human resources indirectly to protect their bottom line.

Why is a growing concern?
R P Yadav, Chairman & Managing Director, Genius Consultants Limited says that it is a practice that needs to be handled with extreme care. While some companies may see it as an easy way to deal with underperformance or adjust to technological shifts, it can have a deep, lasting impact on employee trust, morale, and the overall culture of an organization. Many employees report feeling excluded from key projects, isolated, or pressured by unrealistic standards tied to technology—experiences that can create unnecessary tension and even push valuable talent out the door.

Ways to address to it:
Yadav advises that organizations should focus on building open and honest communication with their teams. Employees need to feel valued and supported, with clear feedback and opportunities to grow. Investing in upskilling and helping workers adapt to new technologies is not just the right thing to do—it’s also good for business. When organizations prioritize their people alongside their technological advancements, they set the stage for long-term success and a thriving workforce.

Vishwanath agrees saying that in this environment, transparent communication, continuous feedback, and career development are crucial in mitigating the risks of silent firing. By creating positive, supportive work environments, organizations can reduce turnover and retain top talent. Ultimately, fostering a culture of trust and career development not only safeguards the talents’ well-being but drives sustainable success for businesses.

On a positive note, Viswanath shares that the emergence of AI and automation has also created several new roles and profiles. Hence, talent with the relevant skills still has enough and more opportunities to thrive in today’s workforce.
